Jim Collins in Good to Great profiled highly successful companies and one of the key elements is what he coined the Level 5 leader. These people were not what you think. Most people when they hear "leader" think of flamboyant CEO's or fast talking politicians. When you dig deeper the opposite holds true. I recommend all of Mr. Maxwell's work. One thing that makes his work real is that John has built non-profit organizations throughout his life with great success. When you build a company, people have to follow you if they work for you because their livelihood depends on it. Building a non-profit organization is not the same. People CHOOSE to follow you and that is what makes his work so profound.

This Book by Lee Hadnum looks at how UK Citizens can attain the status of "non-resident" for tax purposes and avoid all UK taxes. Previously this was a matter of just not being in the country for more than 90 days each year but recent legislation has meant that this is no longer the case. This book then makes sense for anyone contemplating non-residency as a tax planning method so that they do not all foul of the new laws in the UK.

A Critical Review of Michael Gerber's E-Myth Mastery With an Emphasis on the First Part

After reading the first eight pages of Michael Gerber's "E-Myth Mastery," I was uncertain whether I would be able to fulfill the reading requirement set by the professors of my very first grad school class in an Entrepreneurship Program at Western Carolina University. So I decided to combine the reading requirement with the writing assignment. I knew that doing such was the only way I was ever going to read Gerber's book with any sort of critical thinking involved. Turns out there was a great deal worth of material to think critically about, and not in a good way, especially in the first part of the book. Though the second part redeemed the book, this was only to a small extent, since the first part left such an awful taste in my mouth. Read on to learn more.

In his 2006 New York Times Bestseller, The Speed of Trust, Stephen M.R. Covey takes a refreshing new look at personal and organizational effectiveness and leadership and elegantly redefines what it is that lies at its core: the ability to build and maintain trust. This redefinition is predicated on a plain economic truth, namely that trust always affects two outcomes - speed and cost - and when trust goes down, speed also goes down and cost goes up. With this simple shift in perspective Covey places the issue of trust front and centre on the stage of contemporary business concerns, arguing that it has become "the key leadership competency of the new global economy." This article provides a detailed review of the reasoning on which this book is structured to support this claim.

Book Review of "The Checklist Manifesto" - How to Get Things Right

"The Checklist Manifesto" by Atul Gawande is a simple book about using a time-tested but simple technique for avoiding mistakes in complex processes, using a checklist. The sub-title of the book tells it all: "How to Get Things Right." Dr. Gawande is a surgeon and professor at the Harvard Medical School, and he recounts stories of doctors who made simple mistakes that could be corrected by using a simple checklist. He also points out how the use of checklists by pilots has made flying much safer. Aviation checklists actually originated during WWII when one of the first four-engine bombers, the B-17, was being introduced. After several early test fights ended tragically, a group of test pilots devised some simple checklists to make sure that small but important steps were not overlooked when flying this new complex machine. After the pilots began using checklists, they went on to fly B-17 airplanes almost 2 million miles without an accident. Checklists have been used in aviation ever since. Here are some other examples of how checklists can be used to maximize performance:

"How the Mighty Fall" attempts to answer the question: How would a company know if it is failing? This question was inspired at a conference at West Point where noted author and business guru, Jim Collins, was facilitating a select meeting of a twelve US Army Generals, twelve CEO's and twelve social sector leaders. They were gathered to discuss whether America is on the verge of failing after over 200 years of success and Collins was the referee for the debate. As he flew home from the conference, he decided to dig into the research files from his previous work; however, this time he would look not for patterns of success, but for patterns of failure: What are the telltale signs of an organization in decline and what could be done to reverse it? After studying companies that struggled and failed, he and his team of researchers found that there were five stages of decline:

The idea that the New York Police Department (NYPD) just need to clean train couches and stop the rampant vandalism perpetuated by the youth in subways to stave-off the unrelenting series of burglary and sporadic cases of delinquent misdemeanour in the city might seem a bit naive - but history has a way of affirming simple solutions to complex problems. As Malcolm Gladwell demonstrates in his best-selling novel "The Tipping Point", crime and its minor derivatives can be stopped in its tracks by eradicating the seemingly un-related practice of drawing graffiti on walls. And Gladwell fans might correctly predict that...

Checklist Manifest shows us the power of using checklists to breakdown sophisticated tasks into manageable and auditable sections. Thus we can automate the redundant tasks and focus on the relevant 20% to garner 80% of the results. The checklist covers us so we don't miss a small thing and create a big mistake. Checklists have been instrumental in reducing catastrophic surgical failures. Imagine having a surgery on your leg and it was the other leg that had the problem. Checklists are the solution to eliminate or at least significantly reduce these errors.
