To learn more about the changes that are sweeping Burma, AsianTalks spoke to Patrick Boehler, a Hong Kong-based contributor at The Irrawaddy, founded in 1993 by dissidents with an exclusive focus on Burma. Boehler maintained guarded optimism for Burma's future, provided insight into Sino-Burmese relations, and expressed understandable admiration for his fellow Burmese journalists-in-exile who have played no small role in bringing about change. "I feel very privileged to contribute to a newspaper run by Burmese," the soft-spoken Boehler noted. "Launching a journalism career is not easy anywhere right now, but it is probably still easiest in East and Southeast Asia. So a lot of people try to work here."

Navigating Through North Korea and China With Simon Cockerell and Katharina Hesse

There's more to North Korea than what headlines would indicate, at least for Simon Cockerell and Katharina Hesse, two Beijing-based expatriate professionals whose projects often center around the isolated country, and bring them into contact with North Korean nationals. Hesse and Cockerell's experience with North Korea are in some ways a study of contrasts. Through his work with Koryo Tours, Cockerell's understanding of North Korea is one deepened by sympathy for long-time friends with whom he has worked together for years. Hesse's work with North Korean refugees meanwhile brings a more somber perspective to the food shortage problems that are facing the DPRK.

The two favorites representing the two parties, namely, Ron Paul and Obama are held in high esteem by their respective supporters for the forthcoming US presidential election. On personality basis, both the individuals would be amazing, though leadership characteristics and particularly for America in its present critical situation with threats from across the globe would require extra-ordinariness to lead the nation and to sensitively balance the global status. The dream is for restoration of the American faith in the system that forces the common man to bear the brunt of poverty at the pleasure...

Last year, the crisis of the 3,300 Iranian dissidents who have made a home at Camp Ashraf in Iraq for decades exploded when Iraqi militants massacred 47 of them in two separate, brutal attacks. Those killings, the product of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's cozy relationship with the terrorist regime in Tehran, appear to have just been a warmup to Iraq's latest plans for the dissidents. The dissidents, who are protected persons under international law and whom the U.S. has abandoned, in spite of its longstanding legal and moral commitment to protect them, have a short time to achieve refugee status through the United Nations. But so far Maliki has blocked the efforts of the UN and the UN is not pushing to remove Iraq's obstructions. The Iranian dissidents in Ashraf and inside Iran are waiting to see the truth of these words as much as they are waiting to see the UN to respond to the Ashraf crisis with speed and conviction.

Lord Acton had many famous quotes, and perhaps one of the most famous of all, at least in the present period, was his quote regarding history; "those who fail to study their history are doomed to repeat it." That is a good quote isn't it, and I'd say there is a bit of truth to it, however, I would also like to make some other statements about that quote. Riding around in Army vehicles through the streets of protestors isn't exactly safe, and they are liable to be targets, which is a bad scene to begin with, which certainly won't help the protestors cause. This can be epitomized by so many early Europeans coming to the New World in search of a new life, many of which had very little wealth in terms of personal property or education, but eventually pioneered much of the American wilderness creating farms, small communities, and big cities. From the earliest Americans that came to Jamestown Virginia to the more recent immigrants coming through Ellis Island, many of these Americans have argued for less government intervention in their lives and created a culture that keeps the government from controlling everyday choices like gun control to even universal healthcare. Even today, America does not even have a universal healthcare system, even though many other industrial nations do.

The US House few days ago passed a resolution reaffirming 'In God We Trust' as the country's national motto. The measure which was sponsored by Republican Representative Randy Forbes from Virginia was approved with 396 for, 9 against and two abstentions. According to him, the measure was necessary to check "a disturbing trend of inaccuracies and omissions, misunderstandings of church and state, rogue court challenges, and efforts to remove God from the public domain by unelected bureaucrats'.

Puerto Ricans are established as a large part of American society in today's world, but like many ethnic groups in America, they struggled and worked hard to find their place in the United States. While today, Puerto Ricans make a proud, strong cross section of Americana, their story is quite unique and interesting. In part 1 of this 4 part series we studied the history of their early migration and the lineage of Spanglish, a merging of the English and Spanish language unique to Puerto Rican Americans. In this, part 2 of the series, we examine the growth of Puerto Ricans in American society throughout U.S. History.

What started out as just another nation dealing with an Arab Spring has been escalating for months now well into the Arab Fall, and soon the Arab Winter. So far, it has been reported that 3500 Syrian citizens have been killed by their government, but that hasn't stopped the protesters, as the riots rage on despite the attempts from the international community, and the Arab League to ask Syria to put down their weapons against their own people. Well, it's safe to say that the new provincial government cannot get's affairs in order, and there is a bit of sectarian struggle from within. Then there is the Kurds to the North, and even if they for the most part keep to themselves, there are factions within who are constantly at odds within Turkey, and that certainly isn't helping their cause or ours - our need for oil flow that is.

In fact, a recent RAND Report claims that "China's International Behavior" is purely peaceful and it is merely going about its business attempting to garner the resources it needs to keep growing its economy and bring its nation up to its full potential. Look, other nations in the Arab League, even in Egypt have nuclear power plant programs slated or in progress, and they are not pursuing nuclear weapons development.
