Anyone can heat their home with energy that is absorbed from the ground. Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) are buried in your garden and can reduce your energy bills by heating your water and your radiators, they can also heat your under floor heating if you have that installed in your home also. The way that it works is that beneath the surface the ground stays at a constant temperature of around 10C to 12C, this is throughout the year so even if it is the middle of winter you can still be heating your home through the GSHP.

Real estate developers have long been criticized as a threat to the environment and, many times, for good reasons. Suburban sprawl has certainly destroyed many open, green spaces and natural habitats. Forests have been cut down in exchange for big box retail and rows of overpriced McMansions. But, when it comes to urban development, there are examples where saving green space can do more harm then good.

Foundations Of Conservation

The seasonal variation of resources like food, sunlight, and water is natural on Planet Earth. To some extent the planet itself conserves these resources in "reservoirs", and to some extent living creatures survive by collecting resources when they are available and storing them until they are needed. Squirrels, for example, collect and store nuts, and Man once employed passive conditioning techniques to construct buildings that protected him from the hostilities of the atmosphere. While cheap and abundant energy has rendered conservation unnecessary, and even undesirable in our times, times change. As the internet replaces the automobile as the primary means of connecting over distances, and people are no longer shackled to urban areas, some may choose to return to rural areas and lifestyle. In this setting, where man is again in interaction with the natural environment rather than the man made world of the city, the strategy and techniques of conservation again make sense. Everything interacts with it's environment. Like trees, which create their own environment, buildings alter the micro-climate of their own immediate surroundings. Like trees, buildings can be designed to collect, convert, and conserve the energy of their surrounding environment. This paper will describe such environmentally interactive structures.

Our homes might not look like contemporary plant-friendly, glass-domed arboretums in our lifetimes, but they must become a great deal greener than they have been in centuries since the Industrial Age came about. It's time to rethink our living spaces, given the impact homes have on the ecosystem. The electricity, heating and water consumed by housing is enormous. If REAL wellness ever takes hold, it will affect all manner of environmentally friendly choices, not just decisions connected with physical and mental well-being. REAL wellness is about quality of life. Thus, REAL wellness enthusiasts are likely to be responsive to opportunities for acting responsibly and creatively toward the environment. The ethic of REAL wellness includes respect for The Commons.
