How might a watery planet lose all of its water? How might a watery planet gain new water? Well, there are many speculations as to how water arrives on a planet, such as a near miss from a comet glancing the atmosphere, or one hitting the atmosphere and the severe temperatures turns the ice-water to steam, and when it cools it becomes rain putting water on the planet.

What You Need To Know About Telescope Optics

The main function of a telescope is to gather light, magnify it and focus it so that you can see more than you can with your naked eye. Telescopes have been around for centuries and although great improvements have been made in the quality of the telescope optics (and in how they perform) and in the electronics and software available, the telescope optics have remained virtually the same over the years. There are really four main things to know about your telescope optics. These are the aperture, the magnification, the focal length and the focal ratio.

There are basically 2 kinds of telescopes - reflector telescopes and refractor telescopes. As their names suggest, the reflector uses mirrors to reflect incoming light back to the eyepiece, while refractor uses lenses to refract or bend the light towards the eyepiece. This kind of telescope is the most common type of telescope for the amateur astronomer, and they are very good telescopes, but like anything else you might consider buying, there are always pros and cons.

While there is a constant transfer of matter and radiant electromagnetic energy (photons) between bodies throughout the cosmos, there are sinks, ultimate final resting places where matter/energy can retire to and be removed from the rest of the cosmos. These cosmic sinks are Black Holes. But is that retirement permanent, or can stuff re-enter the cosmic workforce? Can Black Holes evaporate? The theoretical short answer is "yes"; the long answer is "no".

While the Big Bang event is the leading candidate and the standard model, it's not the only one. That's fortunate, because while a fair bit of once theoretical now verified observational evidence supports that standard cosmological model, it also comes as well with a fair bit of metaphysical baggage. Very little is known about this comet because of its recent discovery, but it is causing a stir amongst astrophysicists who are working hard to try and nail down accurately its size (quite small they think) mass and orbit.

Is Global Climate Change Occurring Because Earth's Orbit is Decaying?

Not too long ago, I was talking to a climate science expert who'd spend some 28-years studying the ambient temperature increases of Earth and one of the theories he had floated long ago, perhaps in the early 80s was that "The real cause is the earth's orbit around the sun is decaying." Now then, that is an interesting theory isn't it - Indeed, it is. Okay so let's discuss this for a moment shall we?

Gravity rules the cosmos. You can't come to terms with the origins, evolutions and ultimate fates associated with cosmology or astrophysics without understanding gravity and the theory of relativity. Quantum theory also has to apply to cosmology (and astrophysics) anytime you run across micro phenomena where quantum effects need to be considered and where they apply. Unfortunately, there are circumstances where both gravity and quantum physics need to be simultaneously considered - singularities. Unfortunately gravity and quantum physics aren't compatible.

There are ways, for example we can observe the orbits of celestial objects. If it appears that they aren't revolving around a planet or a star then you can pretty much bet that they are circling a black hole.Another way is when stars of a specific magnitude die they explode or go supernova and when they do they unleash a barrage of cosmic rays and one of those types of rays are x-rays,when this happens the Chandra X-Ray Telescope goes to work.

The Big Picture: A Vision for Our Future in Space

Many visions for our future in space have been presented in government and academic proposals (from NASA and other organizations), business plans of companies (e.g., Bigelow Aerospace), and, of course, science fiction (of which 2001: A Space Odyssey is a famous example). There is an abundance of visions, but having any of them catch on to the point of gaining the support needed for successful implementation is a challenge. Some visions have been quite grand, in the hope that the needed support could be rallied, while others have been more modest, in the hope that sufficient support would be easier to obtain. So far, none of the visions for major utilization of space (in particular, human presence beyond low Earth orbit) have achieved the needed support. A good question to ask is: Why haven't any of these visions for space caught on? A related question is: Why should we implement any space vision?
