My name is Alan Kassirer. I'm 52 years old and live in Harrisburg, PA. By day I'm the Chief of Performance and Quality Improvement at Youth Advocate Programs, Inc., a not-for-profit agency specializing in keeping families together.

By evening and weekend, I'm a wanderer. Rarely does a weekend go by where I don't head out on the road to see what there is to see. I grab every flier from every rest area on the road and visit as many as I can. Wineries are my favorite stops so many of my articles will be about the wineries I visit.

In part two of our trip along the Missouri Rhineland, we're going to visit Jefferson City, the State Capital of Missouri. Jefferson City was created specifically for the purpose of being Missouri's State Capital It was designed by Daniel Morgan Boone, son of the famous frontiersman and incorporated in 1825. In 1837 the State Capitol burned to the ground and destroyed all of the State's records. A new Capitol was built in 1842. Jefferson City's 1840 population stood at almost 1,200 people of whom over 250 were slaves. The abundance of slavery in Missouri caused the State to be divided during the Civil War. The State Assembly met at the State Capitol and voted to remain in the Union but Governor Claiborne F. Jackson, who favored slavery, led a group of 50,000 volunteers who joined Confederate forces at Booneville. Union forces soon occupied Jefferson City and the State remained divided throughout the war and beyond.
