Working as an English teacher at a senior high school and supplementing this with SCUBA dive instructing allows him to fund his passions of diving, travelling to strange countries (North Korea anyone?) and tuning & racing fast cars.

Over the past few weeks I have shed blood, sweat and almost a tear or two while trying to rebuild the 4G63 engine on my Evo I. It is the first time I've ever attempted anything like this, and I have learnt a hell of a lot. Thought I'd share with you 10 of the things I have learnt about rebuilding an engine...

Google Vs Japan's Tainted Past

Is Japan heading into a battle with Google once again? Google's attempts to make headway in Japan seems to be a "one step forward, two steps back" kind of process. Street view was welcomed initially, but then it came under huge scrutiny due to Japan's hugely strict privacy rights (a right which seems only to be slackened when an alleged offender of a crime is in the US armed forces, and then it's fair game). But this time it's Google Earth's custom maps that have come under attack.

10 Top Tips For Upgrading Your Evo I-III-DSM

Like many, you probably thought that once you bought your early Evo/DSM that it would be the end of money spent on it. And then you upgrade one part and you can feel the difference it makes. Your mindset then changes to one of "I'll just get this one upgrade, and then I'll be happy with the power/handling" and before you realize it, you've spent the GDP of a small country on the car.

The Shaken - A Motoring Scourge in Japan

If you ask someone in Japan what is the worst thing about car ownership in Japan you will probably get a mixture of responses. "Drunken old guys driving into you", "road surfaces being made partly from coral and offering no grip" and, "the accident insurance system". But maybe the most common complaint people would have is something called the shaken - the 2-yearly testing for motor vehicles.

The Battle of Okinawa

When I initially started to write this article, I elected to give a full recount of the history of Okinawa. About its prehistoric times, when a land bridge existed between Okinawa, Yonaguni (probably the time when the underwater ruins were above the waves) and China... about it originally being a separate country called the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose king believed in not fighting because "Life itself is a treasure"... about its invasion in the 1600s by Satsuma (the feudal domain in Japan, not the type of orange!)... about the Japan's constant classification of Okinawans as second-class citizens (a practice which still occurs today). But then I decided that the most influential time for Okinawa occurred in the first half of 1945, and the battle of Okinawa.

The USS Pueblo was captured in 1968 in DPRK waters and had 83 crew members on board. Apparently the ship was in an awful state (no working guns, engine only partially working etc) and was taken by a DPRK force of only 7 troops. Just imagine for a second that mission briefing to the DPRK troops: "OK comrades, this is the big one: there's a US Imperialist ship with around 80 American devils trespassing in our territorial waters. Kim Il Sung has given our generals on-the-spot guidance and advised us to capture this vessel with the biggest force we can muster... which is why you 7 have been called in! Now get rowing and good luck!".

It was 1am and I was in a hotel in Kaesong, a city 10km from the demilitarized zone (DMZ), probably the most tense place on earth. 3 hours previously I was eating dog for dinner and was now getting a massage from a North Korean waitress, with both the guides in the room watching on.

The Model United Nations - A Teacher's Guide

The Model United Nations is a programme that allows students to take on the role of delegates from specific countries, learn about international issues, and discuss these issues from the point of view of their chosen country. The 4 core skills (reading, writing, speaking & listening) are practised and improved both during the research sessions and the actual UN conference itself. Weeks before the conference, delegates will conduct research into their country, the topic to be talked about, and their country's opinions on the issues at hand. When the time comes for the meeting, delegates will discuss the issues on the agenda, and try to put forward resolutions to solve these problems; resolutions which will need to be voted on if they are to be passed.

How time flies sometimes. It has now been two years since the naked body of Lindsay Ann Hawker was found in a bathtub on the balcony of Tatsuyo Ichihashi, with the suspect managing to run barefoot past nine police officers who went to his apartment, and then evading them on foot. This story made headlines back in the UK straight away but it was only after foreign media became heavily involved that this story started to get mentioned by the Japanese media. Interestingly, the Japanese Wikipedia article on Hawker still does not include Ichihashi's by name, referring to only "the suspect".

I was watching the Superleague game between Castleford and Huddersfield on Saturday night and before the match they announced the passing away of someone related to the Castleford club. I don't think he was a former player or coach, but he had had ties with the club for some time before he passed away. As a mark of respect, the crowd were asked to stand and participate in a minute's applause. As this went on it got me thinking: when and why did the minute's applause turn into a fitting alternative to the minute's silence?

First of all, and the question that many people ask me when I tell them about a trip I made back in '05: Why the hell did you go to North Korea?! The answer is simple: I like to do things a little differently. Most people think a great holiday is sitting on a beach in Thailand for a week, burning themselves and getting hammered every night, waking up around midday etc.
