What does psychological and emotional health mean? It is feeling that all is well with your world, that you are able to cope with whatever life brings your way, that you have direction, purpose and meaning in your life and that you are feeling fulfilled. It means that you have the courage and emotional strength to overcome self doubt, fear and concern for what others might think. You would be living your own life and not a life that is prescribed by others or society. You are not afraid to step outside your comfort zone and you fulfilling your highest vision for your life.
Infections have always been with us and they have caused a lot of suffering and fear. In an attempt to deal with the bacteria which cause some infections medical science has developed antibiotics. The antibiotics were developed without consideration being given to the real underlying reasons why people were developing infections. Problems of hygiene, crowding, sanitation, toxic build up, nutrition, stress, fear, exhaustion, pre-existing diseases, drug therapy and other factors can all play their part in the development of an infection. However, when developing antibiotics the only point considered was the bacteria invading the body. No thought was given to improving and strengthening the body's natural defence mechanisms or dealing with other factors that are a part of the infection picture. The end result was a 'quick fix' in the form of a drug (like so many 'quick fix' answers in our health care system). The antibiotic was hailed as a cure for infections - the consequences of the approach taken to overcome infections were never considered.

On the question of should athletes take supplements there is some research on male athletes, but there is virtually nothing related to recreational exercise or active older adults or women athletes. When athletes have vitamin and mineral deficiencies their performance will be compromised. For example deficiencies of vitamins B1, B2 B6 or C will reduce endurance performance. However, in addition to compromising performance there can be an adverse impact on general health. This article provides some guidelines on amount of vitamin and minerals that an athlete will need.

Adolescents need plenty of vitamins and minerals during their growth spurt. For girls, this generally occurs around 10 to 11 years of age, while for boys it occurs later, at around 12 to 13 years. Nutritional and energy needs at this time are greater than at any other time of life, except during pregnancy and breast feeding. The teenage years are also a time when eating patterns and habits are often not as good as they could be. This places teenagers at the risk of developing one of the many nutritionally related health problems. Providing vitamin and minerals supplements is one measure that can be taken to help ensure that adolescents have the nutrition their body needs.

Ginseng to Replenish Vital Energy

Ginseng is traditionally used as a tonic to revitalise the energy. It is used during recuperation from disease and as a preventative measure, to build resistance, adapt to stress and promote health and longevity. Its effect is on the total mind-body unit rather than specific organs or systems. The biologically active ingredients are a complex mixture of triterpene saponins, known as ginsenosides - at least 30 of these have been isolated so far. The individual ginsenosides may work in opposition for example one ginsenoside (Rb1) works to suppress the central nervous system and another ginsenoside (Rg1) works to stimulate the central nervous system. These opposing actions may contribute to the adaptogenic effect of ginseng (the ability to adapt to the body's needs) and its ability to balance and enhance bodily function by changing to the body's needs at any particular time. Ginseng is very safe herb with no know side effects and a low toxicity profile.

Proteins are one of the most essential food ingredients and there is a minimum quantity that we need to eat if we are to remain healthy. In most Western countries there is an emphasis in the diet on animal protein and being able to eat a thick steak is seen as being a wonderful food. However, there is real evidence that demonstrates that 'excessive' levels of animal protein can potentially trigger many diseases and in particular cancer growth.

The longer the time the toxic material sits in the bowel the longer the time for the proteins to putrefy, the fats to become rancid and the carbohydrates to ferment.
