Six-year-old Alyssa stole my heart the first day I met her. She has a slight speech impediment, which makes her sound like a New Yorker. Wise beyond her six years, Alyssa speaks with such authority you would think she has been here before. On my first day at the Enrichment Center where I teach, Alyssa complained that she did not understand #2 on her homework assignment. I asked her why she was having difficulty with this question. Alyssa looked at me with her slanted little eyes and replied, "Because I haven't been raised yet. There's mur (NY accent) work to do." I stood there...speechless.

I love Black Business Space creator Lee Green's concept of Who Knows Y O U. I love it because I comprehend its meaning in a few different ways. I am reminded of this little caption repeatedly when I send out an invite or invite friends and colleagues to join my forums. This caption is present on every page right there on the upper left hand side. Who Knows Y O U? On Saturday (11/8/08), I was listening to my...

We see the pain in each other's faces. We see in their body language. We see it when we pull up to the stoplight and glance at the person in the car next to us. We see it in the man/woman that smokes one cigarette after another. We see it in the woman who freely gives herself away.

What an amazing discovery! What does success mean to you? I, like many others thought that success meant having a lot of money and material things to show that I had arrived. Of course, we now know that this is far from the truth. Listed below are two circumstances below that helped me view success differently.

It is difficult to give advice about how to live and learn for our errors because each situation varies and we are so sensitive about what we want to hear. I must admit it is scary when our imperfections light up for all to see. However, my experiences snapped clear pictures so I could see myself in plain view. Question: Do you have adequate knowledge of yourself? Do you really want to know who you are? I think the real question is do you value yourself enough to want to know? When you become unconcerned with what others think, you turn your focus on your journey. You turn your focus on transforming.

Whatever your pain is there is a reason she exists. She is there to inform you that you have an appointment to make and to keep. Whether your pain is arrogance, fear, insecurities, or low self-esteem, consider sitting down and embracing her without delay. Only then will you be able to feel (heal) better.

"Never judge a book by its cover." As each day passes this quote sinks deeper into my conscience. The cover is the first thing we see and that's all we have to go on - at first. Let's be real - sometimes the book's cover is disguised. You know, inviting title, sporting bright colors - fronting as if it is a good read. Yet, when you open the book to examine its contents, the energy inside is less than favorable. The book's cover is not in question here - it's the contents written inside. Remember Oprah's guest author that wrote A Million Little Pieces? Attractive title and cover, but the contents were a lie. As my emotional needs shift, I rely more and more on my faith and not my flesh (contents).

I recently read an article stating, "For closure in a relationship you should JUST MOVE ON when your ex says it's over." JUST MOVE ON, huh. The article further stated that yes it sounds harsh and the discomfort will not just go away, but over time you will GET OVER IT. I cannot comprehend how you get over loving someone. (Don't make me go into detail) I have not reached that level of understanding. Getting over love would mean it was not LOVE in the first place. Oh! That could be that 'people love' I talk about. Just fling people around at one's leisure.

"I want all of my senses to be engaged in this life." Dr. Maya Angelou. The first time I read this quotation I froze. Dr. Angelou's words made me realize how often I was unnecessarily exposing myself to an unhealthy environment and unhealthy relationships. I was not experiencing fulfillment in life the way I thought I should. I felt like all of the effervescence I enjoyed during my earlier years had been slowly drained from me. My peers taught me that by pulling and tugging and taking, one could achieve success. The vast presence of that ill-conceived notion crowded my space, crippled my thoughts and led to my feelings of lifelessness. As a result of the internal conflict and confusion, I had to examine my self and determine my new path in life.

The purpose of human life is to encounter and become a powerful expression of the Creator. Dr. Clarissa P. Estes said, "The lonely man attempts to participate in the soul. But like the ego, he is not particularly built for it and tries to grab at the soul rather than develop a relationship with the soul." When I was in my late 20's, I believed I worshiped the Lord because I attended Church every Sunday. I thought I was showing Him my love by my mere presence. In reality, I was not mentally built for a relationship with God at that time. I was grabbing at a concept I had yet to understand.

Theresa's story intrigued me. She was an award winning songwriter and former guest on my radio program. I remember her saying, "People always talk about being down and out but no one ever talks about being up and out." The phone lines lit up like diamonds. This interview was the most successful radio talk hour I had conducted in 5 years. Ms. T had reinvented herself.
