When painting a room, it's best to paint the ceiling first, followed by the walls, with the trim, cabinets, and doors painted last. Work from the top down. In order to keep a wet edge, only cut in one wall at a time before you begin painting with rollers. Brushes are used to cut in around the ceiling, trim, windows, and doors before using a roller. They are also used to paint the trim, window frames and doors.

Repair Drywall and Eliminate Nail Pops

First, the best method to fix your existing nail pops is to make sure that the head of the nail or screw is recessed about 1/32 inch. If it is sticking up, do not drive it too deep or you will break through the paper surface. If you do, the drywall will be severely weakened. Next spread a little spackling compound over the nail pop area. Let it dry and then sand it down. Lay a straight edge over it to make sure that it is not too high. A slightly raised spot is better than making it too shallow. Let it dry thoroughly because the compound will shrink a little. Paint the repaired area with drywall primer. Paint an area larger than the fixed spot so that the larger area will absorb the finished coat uniformly. This will make it almost impossible to detect that a repair was made to the wall. The problem of nail pops can be caused by either improper drywall installation procedures by your builder or by damp lumber. Although lumber is supposedly kiln-dried, it can pick up moisture over time, especially if it has been out in the rain for a while.

So, you've just been asked to help assist your friend in painting their new apartment, or you've just moved into your own new place or even home. You've never painted before; either you've relied on someone else to do it, or hired professional help to take care of it. Now, you want to cut some costs and have heard about others painting for themselves. Well, you can do it, too, with a little elbow grease and a few simple instructions. Determine Your Needs Take a good hard look at your place and what you hope to accomplish via color and accent. If you're planning to "lighten things up", you may want to choose extremely light pastel paints, which almost look like white, but are tinged with color (i.e., green or pink). What to Look For Paint comes in cans or buckets. You are better off buying the buckets which are usually premixed and less expensive. Just let the paint person know at the store what "type" of paint you'll need and for what purpose. Then, fine tune things and choose your favorite color. Paint "types" includes matte, semi-gloss, full-gloss and eggshell.

Many people have different tastes in colors. Some prefer the black and white color scheme to give their home the look of simplicity and contrast, while there are also others who prefer a more colorful approach in painting their homes. Some artistic minds also uses different interior wall painting techniques to make every room in their homes stand out from the rest. However, you have to face the fact that when you purchase an appliance you like, the color scheme will be quite different. It will certainly be very ugly to have an apple green toaster oven in a kitchen where the color scheme is black and white. This is why many people take a lot of time when choosing the appliance they want for their home.

Paint Safety. Before beginning any paint project, make certain you are working in a well ventilated room. Clean As You Go. When painting, keep a damp rag handy to clean up as you go. It's much easier to clean paint that is still wet. Paintbrush Overload For a quicker and more efficient paint job, don't overload the paintbrush or roller. If it drips, there's too much paint. Door Painting When you're painting a door, waiting between coats for each side to dry can be time consuming. Here's a shortcut. First, drive nails into the four corners and attach a length of rope. Loop each rope once around a rafter or beam. After painting one side, you can flip the work over, unlooping the ropes, to paint the other side. Paint Spray Technique Using a paint sprayer can give you some versatility for your next project. Using a spray gun rather than a roller or brush allows you the option of varying color schemes by fading and layering colors. You can achieve this by moving closer or farther away from your surface.
