As I stared out at the surf zone which was strangely gray and foggy, even as the beach was bathed in sunshine, I noticed that my vision was filled with small black dots. When I blinked and the dots did not disappear, a fear rose up in me. But in January of 1996 I had come to a point when I felt sad about the condition of our planet, and my part in it. I was distracted from living in the moment. I felt I'd lost the ambition that I'd had at the age of nineteen when I hitchhiked from Detroit to California to begin my life. From "Hang 'Em High" to "Unforgiven," and his days as Dirty Harry on the streets of San Francisco and New Orleans, Clint has always been both a "man's man" and a "woman's man," something that is not easy for an actor (or a director) to pull off. Many people now have the capacity to shoot and edit video at a fraction of what it used to cost in the "old days." Also, viewers are voracious for video. But if you want your video to stand out in the crowd, you need to follow a few rules of proper videography.
From time to time we get requests from our clients to go and shoot interviews of important people - CEO's, celebrities, doctors, scientists, thought leaders and others - with a green screen in the background. Sometimes a blue screen is requested, but the majority of our gigs feature the green backdrop because it is less likely that the interviewee would be wearing neon green apparel than blue; and the point of the mono-color is that it will be keyed out during the post-production process. If someone happens to be wearing a green tie, for instance, then when the background is keyed out, the green tie will also be keyed out, and the interviewee will look as though they have a tie-shaped hole in their body.

Everyone knows the golden rule: "Do unto others what you would have others do unto you." But this little gem can be easily forgotten by the distracted producer who wants to cram two days of shooting into one day. I have worn various hats of a crew person (sound person, Technical Director, camera operator) and have experienced the fruits of compassionate producers and the vitriol of producers who expect far too much from the hapless crewmember. Here are my guidelines on how to do it right.

The larger our population grows, the more neighbors we have, and yet the less "neighborly" they seem to be. Urban violence and other symptoms of a fragmented society cause us to be suspicious of others, and restrict us from befriending the people down the block. We know in our hearts what being a good friend means. But maybe it wouldn't hurt to remind ourselves of what steps we can take to "love our neighbors as ourselves." Here are five tips on what you can do to be a great neighbor.

Hypatia - Shining Star of Alexandria

When I first learned about Hypatia, I was enthusiastic to find out more about this ancient philosopher, astronomer and mathematician. Here in the 21st century, a woman who could claim all those capabilities would be considered a peer of people like Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson and Buckminster Fuller. This woman born in approximately 375 C.E., was admired by her contemporaries and drew students from all parts of the empire. According to Jone Johnson Lewis, in her article entitled "Hypatia: Astronomer, Philosopher and Mathematician," when the Arabs invaded Alexandria around 642, they burned the contents of the library, including the works of Hypatia, as fuel for their baths. Fortunately, historians have been able to piece together a portrait of her via letters written by her students and contemporaries, and through the works of others who quoted her.

The title of this film, as revealed just prior to the credits, is based on a Rwandan saying that God may spend His days anywhere else in the world, but He returns to Rwanda to rest at night in this African paradise. After watching the interviews and daily lives of five women who survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994 during which a million Tutsis were murdered by Hutus, the saying comes as a complete irony.

Touch is one of the highest expressions of love, and love is our purpose for living. What we strive for in life is emotional comfort (serenity, relaxation). Massage can be cathartic in this regard. When the body is relaxed, the mind can let go. As the mind opens, self-awareness begins.

Reflections on the Status of Women in Ancient Greece and Today

To read about the culture and lifestyle of the ancient Greeks brought on a few "aha" moments for me. When I was 18 years old, I traveled through parts of Greece, solo, and the adventures I experienced there, particularly with men (most of whom were named "Georgos"), were confusing. There were so many subtle nuances that I did not feel privy to, and yet that involved me as a woman... With a clear view back, thirty years later, assisted by Katherine L. French and Allyson M. Poska, authors of Women and Gender in the Western Past, and by Sarah Shaver Hughes and Brady Hughes, who compiled Women in World History, I was able to understand much of what happened to me. While in Patras, I encountered a social stratum of men who shared their women and yet preferred the company of other men. This seems to go directly back to the days of ancient Sparta.

The Art of Self Massage

In our primitive days, we knew all about self massage. There were no combs; we untangled our hair with our fingers. We used "elbow grease" to clean our bodies before soap was invented. Our feet were naturally massaged by the earth, before we fashioned shoes. Somewhere through the ages we lost "touch" with our own bodies, forgetting the naturally pleasing art of self massage. Self massage is self explanatory. It is listening to your body, especially the parts of you in pain. It is a way of understanding your body through touch, of acknowledging its complaints and removing stress through creative use of your own hands.

It would have been great to see each woman - Starhawk, Merlin Stone, Jean Bolen and others - sitting at the place setting of a goddess. Back in 1979, Chicago had depicted place settings for 39 mythical and historical famous women throughout history.

She is remembered still for the emotions she was able to communicate through her dancing. Anna danced virtually all of her life.
