The Origins of Restricting Food and Liquids During Labor

The restriction of food and liquids for laboring women was first implemented more than a half-century ago when women often gave birth under general anesthesia. Since vomiting while under general anesthesia can result in the aspiration of the stomach contents into the lungs, leading to serious breathing difficulties and even death, the medical practice of the time was to reduce the risk of aspiration by drastically limiting a woman's intake during, often allowing only ice chips or sucking on a wet wash cloth to relieve oral dryness. However, the majority of women are no longer delivered under general anesthesia. And, for those women who do require the services of an anesthesiologist, the techniques surrounding the delivery of anesthesia have improved to the point that aspiration is rarely an issue even during a caesarian delivery. Still, the tradition of restricting food and liquids during labor and delivery remains.

It is common practice to withhold food and the majority of liquids from women in labor in most medical facilities. The rationale for this practice has been that, should the woman need general anesthetic, the stomach contents may be aspirated into the lungs resulting in the danger of such complications as choking, pulmonary edema, partial lung collapse, and even death. There is some evidence that, when the administration of general anesthesia was common during childbirth, this complication was associated with a substantial number of maternal deaths.

Many people think of hypnosis as a process by which a pocket watch is waved in front of a subject who is then put into a trance and does the bidding of the hypnotist. Movies show people committing crimes under hypnosis. And television shows show people barking like a dog while in a hypnotic trance. These visions of hypnosis in no way define the process itself. Hypnosis cannot induce behavior from any individual that that individual would not normally participate in. In other words, hypnosis does not force you to do anything against your will.
