As a leader this man knows how to lead in the fullest and finest and highest sense. When a group of young folks were asked to write down what difference Jesus Christ has meant to you, many answered that Jesus has given me purpose, or Jesus has given me a reason for living and a goal, and made my life meaningful. What a privilege for me to be given a purpose for living. How terrible it must be go around living and not knowing why you are here and not being sure of your aim and goal and purpose. Bad leaders impart bad fear which is nothing other than sin, but good leaders inspire and motivate and uplift.

In the Life of a Leader the Right Kind of Fear Can Be a Highly Healthy Characteristic

Our world does not need more clever men or more rich men but it certainly needs more godly men and women. This leader was not only clever but wise and not only rich but godly, and these characteristics are scarce commodities in the present days. Fear is a good thing. Fear of putting your hand in an open fire or fear of rushing across a busy road without looking, or fear of hurting someone you love. The fear of God is healthy, and in a leader it is a most valuable and precious quality. When we have the right kind of fear and the right kind of love then we will have no trouble being holy. That will follow.

A man was overheard saying to his paintings one day, "You make it so hard for me to die". We can be a slave to what we possess or what we desire. How tragically sad when anyone reaches these circumstances. Leaders have to cope with riches and responsibilities and this man certainly knew how to handle both of these tricky areas of life. Prepare your minds for action, or roll up the sleeves of your mind and think straight and know clearly what you believe and why. That is vital no matter type of leadership position you may be in and no matter what type of business. Be self-controlled. Be sober or rational or reasonable. Let no-one else control you, and nothing else control you. Don't get intoxicated with fashionable ideas. We are not to adopt the latest opinions.

We are being reminded today of believers who have only a few pages of the Bible, and they share what they have. We have the whole book, in as many translations, and we have freedom to meet to sing and praise and worship and hear The Word of God. But how reliable is the Bible? Can it be trusted totally and taken as being authoritative? The doctor and the fisherman knew the answer to these questions! We need an anchor to keep us from drifting in these treacherous times. Here it is. This one thing I know Peter is saying to these disciples of Jesus who are having a very hard time, and it is this truth that Jesus Christ is coming back.

His parents had called him Simon, which means a reed, giving the impression that he might be easily blown around in the wind and vulnerable. Jesus Christ gave him a new name, and it was Cephas or Petros, meaning Peter who would be a Rock. Jesus was going to transform him from a reed into a rock. Here was something to build on and stand on and lean on when times were hard and sore and painful. Jesus Christ can do that for you and me. Jesus can transform us, and He does.

His leadership was greatly required and is still much appreciated. He not only led people to the Lord Jesus Christ, but he followed it through, and he wrote to his own converts. There is a reality in the literature of the Bible which you will not find anywhere else.
When Circumstances Do Not Work Out Well or Go Very Wrong, People Look for Someone to Blame

What might happen and what can happen when circumstances appear to go seriously and tragically wrong? People are always looking for someone to blame and accuse when there is something wrong or very different. When disaster strikes people try to find a scapegoat. In A.D. 64, on July 19, another fire began, and this time it was in Rome. Rome was built mainly of wooden houses, and the fire raged for two weeks. Nero watched from his balcony. He said the flames were as charming as flowers! Some said Nero started it, but he began to look for a scapegoat. He noticed a group of people called Christians, and all this can be found in secular history and documented by Tacitus. Emperor Nero falsely diverted the charge upon the Christians.

Consider this in prayer too when we pray that God would give us this day our daily bread. We ask for daily provision. Would we become angry if He only gave us bread? Would we look enquiringly wondering if that was all we were going to be given? It is a costly business to have convictions.

The Economy is crumbling and morality is fast disappearing as men drift away from Almighty God and His Holy Word. Reformers lived by faith in the Word of God and reformers were men to whom God had given wisdom for the leadership of others. Is all this not so required in these present times? All the reformers were aware of what they were saying and what they were doing, but even more importantly, they were aware of why they were saying what they were saying! A Reformer is a man who lives by faith in the word of God. There is however much more. Following recent study it becomes clear that a Reformer is a man to whom God gives wisdom for the leadership of others. In an age of darkness and turmoil the reformers gave light. This was proving to be radical and revolutionary preaching and teaching but it was this return to the authority of the Word of God which brought about the required transformation and is that not so greatly required and needed in our western world today?

This Leader and King, David, was a worshipper, a singer, a poet, and a brave man who had many weaknesses, as well as many strengths. He is such a mixture, just as we are. Oh that more leaders might be able to speak with such assurance and confidence and experience of the mercy and grace and power of Almighty God. Many of our financial and moral and spiritual issues might begin to be resolved disperse and even disappear. We need leaders who know how to behave and act in critical times!

Many face a giant when they awake every morning. It might be addiction, disease, debt, fear, envy, anger, or the painful memory of something that happened years ago. They are like bullying bosses and we must learn how to handle them. We hear now of horrendous goings-on in the boardroom of The Royal Bank of Scotland when Fred Goodwin ruled the roost, but I learned something of this four or five years ago, but although trying, was unable to do anything substantial about this tyrannical behaviour. Leaders can be raised up and appear when we think no one is coming to help and it can normally be when we most need outside help and assistance and deliverance.

Nabal was a very wealthy farmer owning property and one thousand goats and three thousand sheep. Nabal was not the kind of man you wanted to know.
A Biological Explanation Surrounding the Birth of Jesus Christ: Can Such a Lesson Be Possible?

The birth of Jesus contradicts the laws of science, but our faith rests on the miracle of the incarnation. When we consider the birth of Jesus, we are in total awe, and not just because of Mary and Joseph's bumpy ride from Nazareth, or Mary's lack of a doctor, and no anesthesia, and the crudeness of the manger, but also because of how Jesus was conceived. Secularists and liberal theologians have mocked the virgin birth for centuries. The concept of a woman giving birth to a baby without a man's involvement is ludicrous to unbelievers. It contradicts all the laws of biology. Our New Testament Professor and Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Edinburgh used to teach us the wonder of all this in the most simple but profound terms, which would lead us to worship.

There was no reserve team. There was no back up programme planned. Nothing else could be put into operation if this group of leaders had failed, but they did not fail. They had been well trained and prepared and soon they would be on their own - well, not quite on their own. The Thursday, forty days after Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead, is called Ascension Day. Forty days after Jesus rose from the dead, having completed, on earth, what God the Father sent Him to do, He went home. This is no way for the future king to live! David did not subscribe to the philosophy which says that we should find out what people want and then give them what they want. That is not leadership.
This man who is destined to become a great and powerful leader is currently in hiding because he is being hunted. King Saul is told where David is, and off he goes with 3,000 chosen men. King Saul left David alone only for a short while, and back he comes with an army five times as large as David's band of men. King Saul is figurehead of this movement of evil who opposed David. Do you ever find that when someone opposes you he can sometimes keep going and going making every effort to achieve his goal? Have you ever worked for an unreasonable boss, or had to deal with someone who is totally unreasonable? Some people are promoted away beyond their ability.

Leaders who are leading positively and courageously may be confronted with this type of scenario more often than may be admitted! If you are in a desperately tight corner and if people are hunting you and asking for information about you to the extent that they are willing and prepared to hack into your cell phone or mobile phone, then place your life in the hands of the living God through Jesus Christ and trust Him to bring you through triumphantly and victoriously, perhaps not immediately but in the long run that will be the reality. This amazing leader has been so well known for three thousand years and the lessons we can learn from his life are so valid and valuable. Take time and even make time to read it through carefully and see how this man David is led by His Spirit, and strengthened by God's grace, and kept by God's power, and we can know all of this too through the risen and living Lord Jesus Christ.

Having begun a study of the life of King Saul I then was so taken up with the mighty and dynamic spiritual leader, Samuel, which in turn led me on to read in depth something of the life of the early years of David who was being trained and prepared to become king. We read of all this in the first book of Samuel in the Old Testament and any leaders or those seeking to attain to leadership would benefit immensely and enormously from a study of these characters. Under King Saul's bad leadership the nation of Israel was badly administered. Discontentment grew. Those who were oppressed, or in serious debt, or dissatisfied, flocked to David, for help and guidance and leadership and David had to feed, clothe, train and discipline these 400 to 600 men. David spirituality fluctuated. So often leaders think that they must always be on top of things and never get down. Rubbish! David knew what it was to be very low and in the valley of despair on occasion.

If difficulties face you and confront you it is good to have taken time to learn how to cope with these situations. Life is filled with issues and these can be personal or professional or spiritual, and life almost forces us to make choices. David certainly understood this as he was being prepared to become King of Israel. Jonathan the son of King Saul, who is seeking young David's life, suddenly appears to encourage an embattled and discouraged man. "Encourage" here means "to strengthen the hand of". Jonathan comes at the right moment with the right words. He comes to see his beleaguered friend. He addresses the fears and imparts and promotes courage. Both men act. It was more than words! Is this how we encourage and strengthen our friends?

This Chapter in the story of Saul and David in the first book of Samuel is all about divine guidance amidst satanic hazards. David has been through a deep valley. It has been a low point in his life. Each of us goes through similar wilderness seasons and testing times. We have in these first thirteen verses such evidence of the guiding Hand of God. These were hazardous and perilous times. Did not the apostles in the early Church experience all of this too? King Saul hated David. He had this pre-occupation with David and obsession. This led King Saul to neglect the defence of the land, and the Philistines appeared to know and take advantage of Saul's obsession. We are not always aware of how heavy the pressures upon us really are. When difficulties and pressures abound then it is time to place yourself before Almighty God through faith in Jesus Christ, and to commit your entire life into His safekeeping.

In business how many thousands of wrong decisions have been made by employing the wrong people? Are there lies in the Bible? There certainly are, but we always have to be very careful as to whose mouths they emerge. In the heart of the first book of Samuel, the king in training, young David, is accused of saying things which he never said. Saul has no regard whatsoever for these men of God. This is ugly. Men do ugly things at times and we are currently witnessing that across our world. The White House, Washington, and Downing Street, London, could learn so much from this scenario. Our safety certainty and enjoyment is experienced as we walk in the Will of God. If only more leaders knew this and were aware of this and led with this godly sensitivity.

Leaders need friendship and fellowship where men can truly trust one another without any hidden agenda and that is a rare phenomenon. Nowhere is this more needed than when an enemy gangs up against you. This is like King Herod and these wise men. We learn here what happens when sin piles upon sin. The consequences are catastrophic. David went to the mountains caves around En Gedi in the vastness of the wilderness there and not far from where the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden and discovered in 1947. Having visited that area by the Dead Sea on various occasions it is easy to imagine what David and his men had to experience and how hard it must have been even to survive, but this was the man who was chosen to be king. David flees from Israel and goes to Gath, which is a Philistine city and there he acts as if he is mad and insane and daft. This is what fear can do to a man who is called to become a leader. The men who came were those who were in distress, and in pain and upset emotionally and spiritually, through rejection. The sin of rejection can cause chaos and havoc in people's lives. These men were those who were discontented and those who were not satisfied with what was going on. They saw no hope. They had no real meaningful purpose. David, who was king of Israel in waiting, had a season when the then King hunted him. David was a consummate actor as well as having all these other gifts. Did he have to do that? Why did he behave like this? David was skilled as a musician and he demonstrated that he had the courage to face up to and slay the giant.
We see this truth so clearly as we study the lives of King Saul and David, how it is perilously easy to have amazing sympathy with God's truth and remain in sin. Have we not discovered that down through the years, as we face temptation? The chief danger of the church today is that it is trying to get on the same side as the world, and again was that warning not sounded so clearly some years ago? Jesus Christ expects us to accomplish results, even if they bring opposition and conflict. Anything is better than compromise, apathy, and paralysis. God give to us an intense cry for the old-time power of the Gospel of the Holy Ghost. There are many Prayer Meetings around but not much Prayer! Do you understand how serious that is? Each time, before you intercede, in prayer, be quiet first, and worship God in His glory. Think of what He can do, and how He delights to hear the prayers of His redeemed people. In the first book of Samuel in Chapter 20, we read at the start of this deep wholesome friendship between David and Jonathan, King Saul's son. One matter needs to be repeated. Why is it so important? It is crucial because of recently people have suggested that this friendship David and Jonathan might have had homosexual connotations! We read of the deep friendship between David and Jonathan, and some have regarded this friendship and fellowship and maligned it. Sin will do whatever it can to undermine good friendships. Jonathan was the son of King Saul and he became the friend of David who had been anointed to become King of Israel.
They enemy has been trying to destroy the people of God since Creation. Many people are totally unaware of that today. King Saul's intention is to destroy David. Three times men were sent to do harm and three times God protects and preserves His servant, David. The Spirit of God fell upon these various men, and when they met up with those in what is familiarly called the school of prophets, they too begin to prophesy! Were the men so taken up with prophesying that they forgot all about why they were there? They went to do harm, or curse, and they end up prophesying and blessing. Then King Saul himself went and found out where David was and when he arrives on the scene, he too begins to prophesy.
When David who is to become king has to escape from his own home, helped by his wife, Saul's daughter, the whole scenario has suddenly deteriorated. It is an emotional and dramatic incident. Is it not very similar to Saul of tarsus in the New Testament in the book of Acts, when he has been born again, and he has to escape from Damascus in the dark at night over the wall, being lowered in a basket. These things can happen to people in the Christian life! Saul's conscience is seared and we are told all about this in Paul's letters to Timothy. Saul never knew when he was beaten. Evil is a glutton for punishment. Marriage into Saul's family did nothing to temper and quieten, or subdue and calm Saul's jealousy. When a man knows that God has rejected him and taken the Holy Spirit from him, anything can happen. David had been promoted, and that pleased everyone except the person who promoted him. Can you imagine such a thing happening? We read all about the devastation bad emotions can cause in the first book of Samuel in Chapter 18. Psychology would be unable to deal with this issue. It is deeper than psychological. This is a study in the emotion of jealousy, and friendship too, but what was Saul's real motivation in promoting David? Jealousy is a very powerful and dangerous emotion. Psychology or psychiatry cannot explain what is happening here as Saul's personality begins to disintegrate. Sin can cause havoc in a man's life. Rivalry can be positive when among friends, but here it becomes unhealthy and damaging and dangerous and relationships are totally ruined. David, the harpist and armour bearer and successful soldier, was seen as a rival in the eyes of King Saul and Saul grows so very jealous and suspicious. Even the aged prophet, Samuel, had to protect the man, David, who had been anointed as the future king. We read of all this going on in the first book of Samuel in Chapters seventeen and eighteen and nineteen. These were rough and tough days and David's life was in danger. King Saul was afraid of David and soon David was sent away to lead the army, and King Saul is rather hoping that he would be killed, and have this rival removed. There is a parallel with King Herod when Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem of Judea. He attempted to kill the young Christ child. The dowry is announced, and some dowry it proves to be! Having been reading carefully and studying prayerfully in the first book of Samuel we come across emotions which lead to violence in Chapter 18.
A strong able capable speaker should be competent in delivering a word clearly and concisely. We certainly see that here. David, who was anointed and being prepared to become King, knows how to speak up. He had dealt with a lion and a bear, and the Lord God who delivered me then will deliver me from the hand of the Philistine. He had served a most wonderful apprenticeship in the wilderness around Bethlehem looking after sheep. To David these men in the Israeli army were not simply soldiers, but they were part of the army of the living God and David makes that very clear to everyone in one of his powerfully inspiring and confident speeches. A one legged teacher offered his service to go as a missionary with Hudson Taylor of China and when asked why with one leg he was offering to embark on such an arduous life his reply was, "I do not see those with two legs going".

When we endure this financial and economic and moral crisis in the world just now, might Almighty God be preparing another leader who will lead with a prophetic voice and with spiritual insight and wisdom? Strong able leaders are able to speak strong powerful and clear words, where there is no confusion or ambiguity. That is one of the marks of an able capable leader. David saw the same scene as all the other people, but David saw it differently. It is the same with the crucial topic of Creation. Everyone has the same evidence before them but they arrive at very different conclusions. There is not one single scrap of evidence anywhere to support any theory of evolution and we are suffering enormously as a consequence. When spiritual truths are rejected, moral standards slip and slide and that is why we need a leader who will lead with the anointing of Almighty God and the risen and living Lord Jesus Christ upon him.

This leader is a physical giant but he has one highly vulnerable spot and a young boy discovers it and floors him. There is more war, and we read of this horrendous conflict in the first book of Samuel and Chapter 17. The giant of a man, Goliath, taunts the Israeli army. Choose a man to come and fight me. We will settle things this way. This was one way battles were resolved in the Middle East at that time and what a lot of life it saved. Now, do remember, that Israel was and is the chosen people of God but at that time they had a most unfortunate leader in King Saul. Leaders lead for good or ill! When we endure this financial and economic and moral crisis in the world just now, might Almighty God be preparing another leader who will lead with a prophetic voice and with spiritual insight and wisdom?

The Words of a Leader Are So Important and How He Acts and Reacts Are Equally Significant

We all have giants to face from time to time and they can take a whole variety of forms and even appear is a whole range of guises. Whatever it might be that attacks us or gets us down or imprisons us in some way can be regarded as a giant and certainly is regarded by man as a giant of a problem. What a leader says is important as it can explain the significance of what he is doing and identify his motivation. In this scenario it was not personal but national and not ambitious but rather indicated David's sheer devotion to Almighty God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the only God there is. The Philistines will never learn and the people of God are slow to learn! These people against the people of God time and time again, and we find that today. There are certain things which confront us continually.

Peace Can Break Out Among Nations When There Is This Quality of Authentic Authoritative Leadership!

What an impact this man Samuel made! Samuel created a climate in Israel the climate for a prophetic ministry to be exercised for over 200 years. The power of sin within the land was subdued. Now, it takes some leader with amazing leadership gifts to accomplish that and he had every leadership gift which was needed at that particular time. When this leader led the people there was an amazing outburst of thunder. Samuel was building for the future, and that is not very attractive work, nor is it spectacular, but it is vital. Oh how many would so like to see peace spreading abroad today! Well, it can with this quality and calibre of leadership. Does The White House in Washington, and Downing Street, London, know this? Are they aware that this can happen?

People are looking for help and rescuing and strengthening in so many places today and they are not sure why! Three thousand years ago the people of Israel were in such a situation and they had a most powerful leader called Samuel. The people mourned, yearned, and longed for renewal or revival. The nation had to be revived. Half hearted repentance never works. It has got to be more than words, and we saw that with Jonathan, and with Barnabas. Action is required. Commitment is required. Some do question the reality of the Ark of the Lord but Hollywood certainly doesn't, when Hollywood is prepared to pour millions into the making of such a film.

Twenty years lies between these two sentences, and it was a most painful period. They wanted out of their sin. Do people not always want out of their sin even though they may not express it in that way? That is why it is my role and task to point people to Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can truly deal with sin. Someone has been watching so very carefully over these past years. Someone is always watching even when we may think that no one is watching and observing. They now know they need a man of God. When will the western nations comes to that realisation?

David comes onto the world's scene 400 years after Moses, and 400 years before the nation was driven into Exile in Babylon, and he is chosen and anointed and prepared to become one of the greatest leaders this world has ever seen. Read carefully and prayerfully how all this started in the first book of Samuel and Chapter 16, in the Old Testament part of the Bible. The lessons concerning leadership are such that they could not really be improved upon anywhere else. David is probably in his teens. How do you handle information like this? How do you keep your ambition in check? The Spirit of God controlled him! Many years ago someone wrote, "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken!"

A King is being prepared to lead a nation and he is a man with many gifts and talents and abilities. Is this how we choose our Kings and Presidents and Leaders of business and banks and corporations today? Study these basic and fundamental and simple principles carefully as we have them laid out for us in the first book of Samuel and at Chapter 16 in particular, because they are so greatly needed in the present days. Whatever your significant talent may be use it to the full and lead wisely and positively and powerfully, with sensitivity and understanding. David was a shepherd buy who knew how to play the harp really well. We see here something of the powerful influence music can have for good or ill. We must not underestimate the therapeutic value of music, and we have Scriptural and Biblical support for this.

Samuel is sent to Bethlehem to anoint David to be King over Israel. This is one challenging and dangerous task. Saul remained on the throne but David was destined to become king. There are times when God promises us something and it does not happened right away. What a strange school David was in. He had spent his boyhood years in the lonely barren shepherd's fields surrounding Bethlehem. I have been there on various occasions and yes it is dry and barren and the work is hard and arduous. Many would have been able to play the harp, but whose music had that ability to heal the heart and mend the mind of the king?

Have you ever had Almighty God speak to you? I have known this a few times in my life and it has been awesomely real. Have you ever had almighty God speak to you in times of sadness and mourning? This man did and we read all the details in the first book of Samuel and in Chapter 16, where Almighty God speaks to Samuel. God is looking towards the future! God's work goes on unhindered all down through the ages, and we need to see that. Saul was the choice of the people. Young 16 year old David was going to be God's choice, and the criteria for selection would be totally different.
At the time of writing, we in the United Kingdom, are facing a very dark days, when it comes to relationships with press, politicians, and perhaps the police too. Dark days need leaders who can give enlightening leadership. If this does not happen the consequences can be dire and disastrous! The Philistines boasted. If you start a fight with God you are sure to lose. Leaders need to know that, although very few are really interested. They thought God was with them, and some people assume that. Even those in leadership can wrongly make that assumption. It is a great danger.

The Ark had not lost its power, because the Lord of the Ark was now in action and that can be dangerous for anyone who opposes the living God. The Philistines had captured the Ark of Almighty God which belonged to God's chosen people, Israel, and the consequence was nothing but sadness and suffering and disaster and tragedy. God brings plagues and death until it is finally returned to Israel. Dagon was the sign of a fish, or fish tail, or mermaid. This god was half man and half fish; a unifying of life giving power through water. This was a kind of fish god, or a fertility god. It was evil and occult. Send it back to Israel before it kills us all. The Philistines knew about the power of Almighty God before the people of Almighty God recognised it. This went on for months.

Start a fight with God and you are sure to lose, but learning that salutary lesson is a different matter. Do right by God and do not interfere with what God may be doing. Leaders need to learn this lesson and understand the spiritual principles underlying these incidents. Israel and the Philistines underestimated and misunderstood God and His ways. The Philistines thought they had defeated Israel. It looked like it! Did they think the God of Israel was finished? Did they think He was a fraud?

There is a fierce battle on-going and the Israeli army is heavily defeated and the Philistines enjoy an apparent victory, but at first they are fearful. This indeed was a dark hour for Israel and for the people of God. We need to know that times have been dark before, and God can bring people back out into the light. The Ark had been the focus of the presence of God since Sinai under Moses. The Ark had never been captured while under the care of those ordained and appointed to guard it.
The people of Israel at that time had a false trust in the symbol. We must never confuse symbol with reality. When they had suffered a heavy defeat in warfare against the Philistines, they called for the Ark to be brought from Shiloh to the battlefield. They were more concerned with the Ark of the Lord, than the Lord of the Ark. Notice that there is no mention of Samuel the leader here, and there is no reference of Samuel, and apparently no consultation took place with Samuel. It is as though Samuel had no part in this campaign. That is somewhat clear and obvious. Samuel was an Intercessor for the people. Did Samuel know anything about the dire situation the army of Israel was facing? Religious enthusiasm is not a substitute for obedience and intimacy. Shout all you want, but if your heart is not right, it will not produce victory.
